Call to Action! Calabazas BMX Park

Calabazas BMX bike park is one of the largest city-funded BMX courses of its kind in the Bay Area. Many of our kids have grown up riding the course and it is an absolute treasure in the concrete jungles of the City of San Jose. It’s a wonderful compact open space for all ages and socioeconomic levels to come together that’s close to home. It’s a community space that fosters friendships and an infectious appreciation for being outdoors. For our community, it represents the feeling of freedom that comes from being on a bicycle where we can meet other wonderful people in our local community.

SVMTB needs your voice to help amplify the need for improvements to increase safety at the BMX park.

  • Over time, features have degraded causing lack of momentum.
  • Poor drainage forces closures during the rainy season.
  • There’s poor flow and dangerous mixing zones where it’s unclear which way kids should be riding, causing collisions.
  • The park does not offer a natural skills progression causing big leaps in skill to go from one zone to the next.
  • The dirt surfaces are loose & slippery, and require a lot of maintenance.

SVMTB would like to organize dig days at Calabazas BMX but the park needs more work than volunteers can provide. We need the City of San Jose to fund improvements to the park to help ensure much needed maintenance is done to improve safety and rideability at the park.

Please take a few minutes to write to District 1 Council Member Rosemary Kamei to express the need for funding to improve the park and make it safer and more fun!

Dear Council Member Kamei,

Thank you so much for all that you do for the City of San Jose.

Calabazas BMX bike park is an absolute treasure in the concrete jungles of the City of San Jose and many of our kids have grown up riding the course.

Calabazas BMX Park sees very heavy usage, especially over the weekend. It would benefit greatly to provide funding to improve the safety of the park especially as more people frequent the BMX park as the weather warms up. Below are examples of issues that need to be addressed by much needed maintenance:

  • Over time, features have degraded causing lack of momentum.
  • Poor drainage forces closures during the rainy season.
  • There’s poor flow and dangerous mixing zones where it’s unclear which way kids should be riding, causing collisions.
  • The park does not offer a natural skills progression causing big leaps in skill to go from one zone to the next.
  • The dirt surfaces are loose & slippery, and require a lot of maintenance.

Please provide funding to improve the safety of this park.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
