RCdT Transfer’s to NPS- 4000 acres of Coastal Lands

Mt Bikers Welcome on These Coastal Acres

The Midcoast is now officially home to a national park. Nearly a year later than expected, late last week Golden Gate National Recreation Area announced the transfer of Rancho Corral de Tierra, the 4,262-acre Midcoast land previously managed by Peninsula Open Space Trust. “We are pleased that congress has provided funding to complete the purchase of Rancho Corral de Tierra,” GGNRA Superintendent Frank Dean said in a prepared release. “This magnificent parcel adds to the region’s protected open space, and helps extend existing national parklands on Milagra Ridge and Sweeney Ridge southward in the Coastside of San Mateo County.”

National Park Service had been working on the various transaction requirements. In March, GGRNA Planning Program Manager Nancy Hornor told the Review the federal agency was working with POST to clear the bureaucratic hurdles required of a federal land acquisition.

POST President Walter Moore said he was thrilled to see Rancho officially become part of GGNRA.

“We are honored to be able to add almost 4,000 more acres of parkland for the public to enjoy,” Moore said in a prepared statement. “It is a testament to the beauty and ecological significance of this land that it is now a national park.”

In the coming months, the National Park Service will work with

the local communities and public land agencies in the Coastside to develop maps and signage on the existing network of trails, and develop a long-term plan for the new national park site.

Parkland Acquisition Plan for the County of Santa Clara

I went to the Parkland Acquisition Plan for the County of Santa Clara public meeting 11/8/2011. It was actually quite cool, though the subject is largely urban park planning right now.

Excuse any misrepresentations of what anyone expressed.

Everyone needs to go to http://www.parkhere.org/portal/site/parks/ and complete the Acquisition Plan survey under Quick Clicks, ninth (9th) choice down.

We need to comment on the acquisition process, and that our concerns and wishes should be an integral part of the acquisition criteria. To do this, email your comments to Brian.Hattsell@prk.sccgov.org by November 18. My comment is that two new criteria need to be added to the Park Acquisition Guidelines or Themes. These two items are
1. Grassroots support and Community desire should be give significant weight
2. Demand for an underserved activity should be given significant weight.

At the meeting last Tuesday there were 12 locals/ voters/ concerned citizens. About four folks were watching and executing the show.

Most significant (to me) was Steve Blomquist, from Supervisor Dave Corteses office, and Robb Courtney, the new (three days?) Santa Clara County Parks Director were there.

There was a specific agenda, but due to the small size of the participating public, it was very participant driven. People spoke, and we largely had specific recreation sites in mind. The current direction of the Acquisition Plan is based upon themes, rather than sites we want for recreation areas.

Supervisor and President of the Supervisors, Dave Cortese, had shown up during this discussion of themes versus sites. He interjected his short experience with the board and what he saw what was needed, in his view. He stressed that it was just from his view, and that he thought it is his job to execute what we, his constituents, want and need. Dave gave us a nice summary of where were have been, where we are, and where we are going in regards to County Parks Land Acquisition.

Basically, the land acquisition policy has changed from site specific to goal specific. The process we are gong through now is to define and confirm those goals. At this community meeting, though the public wanted to address specific site desires, the goal was to define the themes

My personal agenda is expansion of the county motorcycle park into the adjacent 5000 acre United Technologies property. I know that motorcycle riding would be limited (but high quality), but the mixed use aspect and beauty and desolation can make this a spectacular park. The popularity of Motorcycle Park, and funding from the state OHV fund make this a unique possibility.

We have to make this happen by telling our elected and appointed officials and administrators that this is important to us.

We get the government we deserve. Please help.

Mindego Ridge Trail to Close to Bikes

The Mindego Ridge Public Access Committee met on 11/10/2011 to hear staff recommendations on access to the Mindego Hill Area of Russian Ridge, near Alpine Road.

Meeting Agenda

The plan proposes a new multiuse wide singletrack trail parallel to Alpine road and recommends closing Mindego Ridge Trail to bikes.

The Committee of board members consists of Jed Cyr, Yuriko Kishimoto, and Cecily Harris. I was quite surprised to hear her come out in favor of multiuse because she has proven to be thoroughly anti-bike as the coordinator of the trails committee for San Mateo County Parks.

The crux of the issue is that the San Francisco Garter Snake is a fully protected endangered species and as such it is against the law to kill, harm, or threaten the species in any way. It may be that they are being overly cautious, but their primary mission is to protect natural resources, so it is easy to see where they are coming from.

The committee will now make a recommendation to the full board to close the trail to bikes probably next year some time. There will be another opportunity for public input, but it is highly unlikely that the recommendation will not be adopted.

MROSD Wants to CLose Mindego Hill to Bikes

Mindego Hill was annexed to Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve. Due to Concerns about the San Francisco Garter Snake, they are going to recommend closing the trail to Mindego Hill to Bikes.
The proposed Ancient Oaks Connector tr is the only new multi use trail proposed in this upcoming public meeting.
The “multi-use 4 mile loop” shown in the Mindego plan is already 1/2-3/4(roughly) in existence+in public use as part of Russian Ridge.

Also, on a more fearsome extrapolation of this proposal:

The open ended nature of this interpretation-implementation of mrosd trails (non)access potential.
If bikes are verboten from Mindego Ridge trail , even though it meets the stringent criteria established by the Federal Endangered Species act,in that it is outside the min protection(1,500 feet) demanded by the most restrictive Fully Protected endangered species rules.
This broad interpretation could be used to ban our ranks in the future, whether it be 1500ft,or 10,000 feet….and beyond…
Food for thought , consider attending the Use and Management Committee meeting on Nov 10, 2011, 1pm, at 330 Distel Circle Los Altos, or contact the MROSD board directly, see link below:

ROMP Endo Year Picnic Super Success!

The day started out like any other, caravan’d down from SF , stopped in Morgan Hill for sustenance.
Meeting the beginner -intermediate riders at the San Martin Parking lot of Harvey Bear County Park was a breeze.
Clean facilities+ample people of all stripes. Dog walkers,Equestrians,Joggers, MB riders,+some just plain ol sightseer’s.
We had 12-15 or so riders show, 2 MORCA riders from Monterey and many ROMP peeps.
We quickly split into 2 swarms, and w trail maps in hand, we proceeded to do similar loops within this fantastic Santa Clara County Park.
The weather was mild, terrain allowed for steady climbs+fun single track descents.
Back to the vehicles at around 1pm, many of us headed for the Gilroy Hot Springs picnic site.
What a remarkable place to gather.
Laura from Friends of Gilroy Hot Springs(FOGHS) was kind enough to take us for an informative tour.
The Hot Springs dip was soon to follow, w many attendee’s simply soaking their toes in the tubs, and others(like me) choosing a full on immersion plunge.
The magic waters of the spring churtle out at a perfect 104 deg temp, easily filling the 2 large soaking tubs(think tupperware for giants)
Nothing could be more perfect as an apres ride treat, and many of us made full use of this soothing+peaceful place.
At 2pm ish, the caterer arrived w the savoi fare,we made quick work of the delicious grub, and what little was left, the folks camping overnight secured for snacking+ as the night fell.
A HUGE ROMP High 5 to Henry+Carla P for coordinating this yearly event, Norm+the Hulk for leading the beginner ride,FOGHS for their hospitality, Hank the Wank showing us that even the elders can turn the cranks, Paul for leading the super human loop in Henry Coe,Santa Clara County Parks for including MB riders at Harvey Bear and many other Parks within their jurisdiction, and everyone else for making this a very memorial day.

This area(FOGHS) is perfectly suited for us MB riders as base camp for not only Henry Coe rides, but there are many options for all ability riders+walkers straight from the FOGHS site.
We at ROMP will be arranging other happenings here, C’mon out+take part , you won’t regret it.
